Course overview

Obviously the aim is to help students improve their English with a view to ensuring that they will be able to use English accurately and fluently.

The school ethos is to go one step further, than basic language learning. It is  to help students develop a love of languages through learning strategies that encourage and assist them to move towards becoming more independent learners.

This innovative process helps to equip students with the right strategies for continuing to learn after the course has finished

Teaching methodology

The school combines traditional language teaching with the latest teaching techniques. Students learn relevant language which they can put into immediate use.

Prior to their first lesson the students are tested by the teachers and then are split by age (our Tigers, Mainstream and Seniors) and level. Classes are arranged to maximise our excellent nationality mix.

UIC students have a minimum of 18 hours of English lessons per week. Seniors have slightly more hours.

Activities

The on-site activity programme is designed to be an extension of the English lessons and are specifically designed to enhance and improve communicative English. This might include such things as Conversation clubs, Radio classes, whole school challenges etc

Whole school activities

Some activities are whole school activities and are a chance for students to meet each other in a more social setting and to have some fun – as well as to learn about other cultures.

Sometimes groups are split into their nationalities and sometimes in their school teams – and then there might be talent shows, fashion shows or different kinds of dancing.

Activities according to age range

The school operates a two tier system with regard to age, (11-14 years, 15-17 years), within this age range students are placed in ‘teams’ to ensure a good nationality mix and encourage bonding.

Sports and Arts and Crafts

There is also a great mix of sports, arts and crafts, music and drama and social events. Students have opportunities to try new activities as well as one’s they may already know.

Excursion programme

There are excursions twice a week for students and for many this is the most exciting time. The staff who run the excursions are all fully trained to ensure that excursions are not just extremely enjoyable and fun but that they serve an educational role.Visits take into account the historical and cultural aspects of the city and the educational value and the use of the English language.

London is one of the biggest attractions and we make sure that everyone has at least one visit to London – to see the sights and perhaps have the opportunity to do a little shopping.

Excursions may include the following places:

  • London Eye
  • Brighton Pavilion
  • Oxford Colleges
  • Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
  • Windsor Castle
  • Hampton Court Palace

Optional extras

A fabulous array of optional extras can be booked at the time of registration, enabling UIC students to have tennis tuition, horse riding lessons and practice their golf with professional teachers. Students also have the option to go to the Theatre in London to see a famous west-end show.

Safety

Safety is always the number one priority on any excursion. All students have an identity card with the mobile telephone number of the teacher in charge of the excursion as well as all the school contact details.
