The GLS German Language School is located in the historic centre of Berlin, in trendy "Prenzlauer Berg". Around 1900 this district used to be home, if home is the right word, to the poor and destitute of Berlin.

Accommodation
In common with many of the language schools that we work with, GLS Berlin offer you offer you a choice of accommodation options, from homestay with a German family, to the outstanding, on campus, student residence.
Student residence
The fifty, on campus studio-apartments, are mini lofts facing the garden just behind the language school: The studios used to be class rooms. GLS has converted two historic school buildings into really spacious apartments.
Apartment sizes vary between 23 und 38 m². Every studio has its own unique style. There are 2 categories: standard (Hotel 1) and superior (Hotel 2). All standard studios are mini-lofts, i.e. the sleeping area is on a higher level - the ceilings are 4.80 m high.
All studios are fully equipped mini-apartments and you can book single, double or shared double. They have the following amenities:
- kitchen
- own WC and shower (bathtub in superior studios)
- free WLAN for your laptop
- telephone and TV
- linen & towels
Homestay
In the context of GLS and Berlin "host family" usually means somebody will be there for you to serve breakfast as well as dinner. It does not necessarily mean, that you´ll be staying with a traditional family. Your hosts can be couples (married or not) as well as singles, with or without kids.
More relevant is that they are friendly and open and that they are willing to spend time with you. All hosts have been inspected, and many have been hosting GLS students for several years. In fact host families can be between five and fifty minutes by bus, metro or bicycle. Host families offering half board accommodation tend to be further away from school - in the outer districts where families live. Many hosts in the central districts work, and therefore prefer to offer only self catering or breakfast accommodation.
Listed below are the types of facilities you can expect when staying with a GLS recommended host family in Berlin:
transfer to airport or station upon arrival and departure (by car or public transport)
- single room with bed, table and closet
- own key
- linen & towels
- shared bathroom
- use of washing machine: not included, but some hosts let you use it
- breakfast and dinner*
You can also book dinner at the GLS restaurant if you prefer not to go back to your host family for your evening meal. However, please note that you have to decide upfront which dinner option you book - i.e. you can´t decide on a daily basis.
