Course overview

Subject classes take place each weekday providing a total of 24 hours over the week. For three weeks students will follow an IB Diploma timetable. Each week will have a different subject emphasis.

The classes provide introductory courses to the IB Diploma in Science, Mathematics, English and Individuals and Societies, Languages and the Arts.

These are combined with elements of The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Action and Service (CAS).

The students will also take part in lectures, local excursions and study visits, English language, public speaking and debating.

Week 1: Mathematics and Humanities

Students will be placed in a mathematics class according to their ability. This will be determined using a test on the first day of the course.

Students will be introduced to the framework employed in the Diploma programme for the teaching of the Humanities and will then be able to choose to undertake small projects in those subject areas which interest them most.

Week 2: Science and Arts

A choice of arts activities will be available to students according to their aptitude and interest.

Week 3: Language and Literature

All students study literature as part of their Diploma. In this part of the course the focus will be upon the nature and structure of the literature course. Most students usually follow literature in their first language.

All students will attend a live performance of a Shakespeare play as part of this module.

Second language tuition

There will be tuition available for students’ second language (language B or A2). Some afternoon sessions will be used to introduce students to the CAS requirements of the Diploma.

Study outside the classroom

Every IB summer student is expected to spend some time in private study each evening, before activities begin. This enables students to consolidate work covered in the day and to prepare for the next day's studies. Other core activities include:

  • Study visits to Oxford museums and colleges
  • Lectures on intenational affairs, global issues, politics and development
  • Subject introduction classes emphasizing study skills
  • An introduction to creativity, action and service
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lectures, introducing this vital component of the Diploma.
  • Expert careers and university admissions advice

Student progress

Progress in class is monitored by the relevant class teachers and the Course Director. Students receive a written report for all classes taken. These reports detail the work covered and comment upon performance and ability in the subject. All teaching materials are included in the course fees.

Learning resources

Situated in the heart of the College and open throughout the year, the extensive resources of the library are made available to all summer students. The large facility houses all the texts required for the full range of IB subjects and is a rich source of information and inspiration.

The school also has an extensive collection of IB past papers and is an invaluable resource for Diploma teachers and students. ICT facilities, including high speed internet access, are available to students within the library and locations throughout the college.
