Programme overview
The Junior Syllabus is a well-structured framework for teenage learners. Lessons promote speaking, reading, listening and writing skills practice to increase language fluency but also the opportunity to improve language accuracy with challenging grammar exercises and focus on new vocabulary.
The syllabus is complemented by culture themed lessons, focusing on different aspects of British life, including music, sport, literature and history. They are an opportunity for students to find out more about their host culture and compare their cultural experience and background with that of other students.
Assessment and certification
On arrival all students sit a written and oral exam to identify which level study is the most appropriate for them
Based on continuous assessment throughout their stay all students receive a Report Card and Certificate of Attendance at the end of their course.
English Language Teaching
The school has every reason to be very proud of the summer junior programme at Royal Holloway. A huge amount of thought has gone into developing engaging lessons which benefit teenage language learners inside and outside the classroom.
Every student who attends a summer language programme with us deserves to gain confidence, improve their communication skills, enjoy themselves and leave with lasting memories and friendships.
The language teaching element of the course is based around ‘Love – Live – Learn English!’ The teaching team use the 3rd edition of Oxford International’s successful junior course book series under a new theme: Language for Life. The course is available in six levels ranging from A1 to C2. There are three different lesson types to ensure variety for everyone.
Study Lessons
Language Study lessons focus on the building blocks of the English language:
- Building communicative competence
- Learning new vocabulary
- Understanding grammar
- Practice in realistic and engaging activities
Language for Life lessons focus on topics, skills and vocabulary relevant to students’ lives not just the classroom, e.g.
- study skills
- functional language
- communication skills
- with activities that engage and motivate.
Reading, hearing, saying and writing new words is not enough. Therefore in our weekly Review lesson students recycle new language in the format of a Conversation Club (structure dependent on levels and ability) while projects are all about cooperation and creativity. Themes range from photography projects to international cookery books or sketch performances.
Activities and Excursions
Afternoon activities take account of morning lessons and include various sports activities as well as arts and crafts and a regular conversation club as well as evening activities which include a welcome party, movie nights, a school show to name but a few things
There is an extensive activity and excursion programme over a two week period the following excursions take place: (subject to change)
